@larryh, thanks, I just bought a scanner online, will see if I get something the next time this happens.
-
I was able to enter the Engineering Test Mode, but there were no codes listed under the DTC screen. I would think if it were something this serious (that it would shut the car down), it should have generated a code of sorts.
-
@larryh and @murphy, thanks for explaining the codes. Will get them the next time this happens and then bring it to the dealer.

I originally reported getting this warning x 2, coming down a hill. I thought maybe the battery was overheating by overcharging in Slope Assist Mode. However, today, after driving normally and after the car was turned off and parked, I received a remote message saying that there is a warning light on. I went back to the car, and it was the same "stop safely now" warning, and the car could not start properly. As before, after ~ 5 minutes, I was again able to start the car normally. The last time I brought it in to the dealer, they were not able to find anything wrong. I am not sure what I should do, as this is a bit unnerving since the car shuts down when this warning light comes on and can be dangerous if driving on the highway as I would not be able to get the car to side of the road. I keep reading about some kind of a code the car generates when things go wrong, but I am uncertain how to obtain it to know exactly what is wrong. As many on this forum have stated, it seems that the code should be obtained when it happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious, were you going down a hill with a relatively full HVB when this happened?

Thanks again Russael, but I am not sure how to proceed next, as the dealer service folks seem to think the warning I had is due to user error (using L gear to go down a hill; I had to explain that I wanted to recupe some of the energy, with blank looks on the fellow's face), and more importantly, they couldn't find anything wrong based on their diagnostics. They basically told me to stop shifting to L to go down hills.... The reason I was wondering if it had anything to do with switching to the ICE engine is because on my traded in Prius (2007), when the battery is full from going down the hill, the engine would "rev" to dissipate and avoid excessive charging of the battery. It seems that this does happen occasionally with the Ford Fusion Energi, but not always. With my Leaf, I also never had any issues going down the hill (but I do charge it to 80% for the most part, and have noticed that the regen does not occur if the battery is to 100% before heading down the hill.) I really like this Ford, but these two incidents are making me a bit nervous.

I have this problem as I live on a large hill. I have subsequently run into problems. On two occasions, the "stop safely now" warning came on as I near the bottom of the hill. On these two occasions, the ICE did not kick in, and I think either the battery or the transmission overheated. I brought it into the dealer and they ran some diagnostics on the car but did not finding any codes. Unfortunately, the service folks at the dealer are clueless about the new electric hybrid cars and did not offer much insight or give me any confidence in their assessment of what had occurred.

Is it possible to overcharge/overheat the High Voltage Battery
Dabu replied to Dabu's topic in Batteries & Charging
Thanks Russael. I think I will bring it in to have them look at it. It normally does rev the ICE when I go down the hill (I live on this hill), but not these 2 times. The first time it happened, I actually had it on hill assist. I am wondering if it heated faster than it was able to switch. Also, when this happened, I could not turn off the car until ~ 5 - 10 minutes, then it was fun after wards. I noticed on the Energy Screen, the battery dot was flashing this last time. I tried to do a Health report but it would not allow me. I am a little bit frustrated as the car only has 1100 miles on it. -
I have had 2 episodes of "stop safely now" with the AC going off and no power to the wheels. They both happened when I was going down a large hill, in L shift with an almost full battery. Did I overheat the battery and hence the engine stopped? Will the Dealer be able to tell what happened if they did a diagnostic? Thanks in advance.

So far it has not happened again. I am thinking of bring it in, but from the forum, it seems that unless it is something obvious, it is low yield. As for grade assist, I usually turn it on when I go down the hill. But after getting the 240V charger, the battery is full most of the time and the grade assist goes to rev-ing the ICE engine instead of charging the high voltage battery. I wish there were someway of charging to 80 - 90%, so that I can recupe some of the energy from climbing the hill.

Charging when you live near the top of a hill
Dabu replied to sjb's topic in Energi Driving Tips & Tricks
I have the same problem. With my Leaf, I charge to 80% only so that I can recupe some of that energy, but I don't think there is an easy or automatic way to charge less than full on the Ford Fusion Energi. -
I now have had the car for a little less than a month, I am thrilled with the car. However, yesterday, the "service engine soon" light came on. It had been raining, so I thought maybe water condensation in the fuel tank might be the cause, so I filled my tank (only used 1/2 a tank so far for ~ 740 miles of driving). This morning, the light went off, so I assume everything was ok. However, as I was driving down the hill from our house, the "stop safely now" light came on suddenly, with loss of power to the wheels, though I was able to steer and brake. I did have the "drive with grade assist" on and the battery was almost full. At this point, the air vents also turned on full blast, not sure if the AC was on as well, and I could not turn them off via the climate control button or panel. I pulled off to the side and was able to turn the car off and then restart. I have been looking on the web, and it looked like this warning has been a big to do with the Ford Focus Electric. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this with a Ford Fusion Energi. I have not had time to do so, but would running a health report using Sync be helpful here? Thanks.

Asks if car is still plugged before allowing the car to start.

It'san AeroVironment EV Home Charging Station. It is working well, just a bit tight. -
Asks if car is still plugged before allowing the car to start.
Dabu replied to Dabu's topic in Batteries & Charging
Thanks. In my case, however, it was the L2 charger. For some reason, the fit was too snug and I wasn't removing it correctly, and the car could not tell whether it was removed. When I removed it more carefully, it was no longer an issue. -
I bought my Fusion Titanium Energi ~ 2 weeks ago, and everything had been going well until yesterday when I tried to start the car and the vehicle asked whether it is still plugged. It eventually started, but not sure what has changed. I did recently install a L2 charger and am not sure if it is related. The charge port ring of light also flashes after I disconnect the charger, which it didn't do before. Anyone else experience this? Thanks.
