Ford's lack of support for EVs
stevedebi replied to flyingcheesehead's topic in Lounge - Fusion Energi
I just checked out this car: The article I read claims 100 MPG, but that can't be right, it must include using the battery, which isn't possible in highway mode with a 9KWH battery. I would expect similar MPG to the normal model with the same engine, about 29 MPG on full highway mode. The City MPGe is 59, far lower than the FFE.Larger car, of course. 17 miles of EV driving. Edit: Pricing, For the T8 Drive-E Twin Engine, arriving later this year, pricing will be $68,100 for Momentum trim, $70,000 in R-Design trim, and $71,600 in Inscription trim. A $995 destination charge is additional on all models. But then, it is a Volvo, and a different class of vehicle than the FFE! http://www.greencarcongress.com/2015/05/20150517-xc90.html -
1. The battery display is an estimated range, and is based on your driving habits and how much energy you have recently used. On my C-Max Energi, when I have been doing my normal EV driving, it reads 31 in the morning, but quickly goes down to 28. The next day after a highyway run, it generally reads 25 at start up. The guage is also impacted by what is drawing energy at the present time, so A/C and (especially) EV heat will really hit the range. 2. There is no change to the amount charged with 120v vs 240v - only how long it takes to charge.

Would you buy a car from Apple?
stevedebi replied to meyersnole's topic in Lounge - Off Topic Discussion
The browser can vary, but in general it goes back to the last page, just like the back button in a browser. With most other apps, the back button goes back to the previous display in that app; if you get to the first screen, another "back" closes the app. It means that a lot of apps work exactly the same, using the back button on the phone instead of something programmed into the app. Like with the PC/Apple world, these two design philosophies are vastly different. On a serious note, I suspect a car would be different too. With Android, I can also hit the "home" button if I desire to open a new app. What really kills me with the iPhone is working with the system menus. On Android, I can open the list of settings, go into a setting, and then the back key returns to the list of settings. -

A little humor here: The iPhone has no "back" button (or at least the ones I've see didn't have one). As an Android user, that button is really important to the way I use the phone. I'd be afraid they would forget the reverse gear on their vehicle. ;) -
The $5,000.00 Ford Premium Maintenance Plan question

At your mileage that is a great price. On a new car that is about 2100. -
The $5,000.00 Ford Premium Maintenance Plan question
stevedebi replied to FusionNAZ's topic in General Discussion
I believe that you can get an ESP from Ford even after the normal time or mileage, but you have to pay for a dealer to examine the vehicle to ensure that it is OK. You might ask your dealer ESP department. -
Sounds reasonable to me. Here in CA it is 30 days out of comission for the same issue.

Where does it vent when driving? There are inlet vents over the rear wheels, where does it exhaust?

I seem to recall a thread that indicates they are ducted into the doors, if I remember correctly. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I've not not looked below the cargo area on my Energi.

That post appears to be related to the fans during charging? Interesting design, rather different than the C-Max (where of course we don't have a trunk).

Driving the Energi as a hybrid
stevedebi replied to troylikesbikes's topic in Energi Driving Tips & Tricks
From what I've read, Ford managed to make the engine lighter by omitting some of the features that kept the engine quieter. Hence the ANC to cancel out the engine noise, and I'm not sure it works when the ICE is off. -
Is there a hidden cellular modem in MFT?
stevedebi replied to gladeplugin's topic in Audio, Navigation & SYNC
Thanks for the correction - I suppose the onoine MFM is where I saw it. As for services, I see from the online site that it is indeed 3 years, not five. I'm not sure I will be renewing that one. Good clarification, I knew it went through my cellphone, but it got tangled in with discussion of lengths. EDIT: The only thing I use services for is to enter destinations into my phone and transfer them to the car. -

Yes, I knew that - and for the newer C-Max, they also include traffic link. I was speaking of the AT&T connection, and the "My Services" stuff. I believe that is 5 years also, but don't recall where I read that. -

I seem to recall wording that the network service is free for 5 years. Sorry, can't remember where I read that. -
HB, Probably just adjusting the algorithm. It sounds like Ford did what Honda did on their Civic Hybrid recall - they changed the way the batteries were charged to make them last longer. Better than what Honda did; their update caused MPG to plummet (but saved the batteries from premature failure). Owners were not amused.

Driving the Energi as a hybrid
stevedebi replied to troylikesbikes's topic in Energi Driving Tips & Tricks
Concur. Sorry if I missed it, but are you still under warranty? Even if not, the eCVT and engine are covered by the hybrid warranty. I would hope the dealer would at least read any codes for free. -
Driving the Energi as a hybrid

You should take it to the dealer, so Ford is aware of the issue (even if it turns out something is not wrong with your car). The car should never shut down simply because of downhill; it should be able to handle these events. -
HB, After a few searches, I think what I am remembering is 2013 owners who refused flash upgrades to their CPU for fear of losing MPGe. That made me think their fears had a reason, but I'm not seeing posts over in the C-Max Energi forum to back up that fear.

Driving the Energi as a hybrid
stevedebi replied to troylikesbikes's topic in Energi Driving Tips & Tricks
They have to worry about it failing to the point where there is a CARB / EPA warranty claim, that is, a failed battery. I did a search but could not find any criteria about the percentage of battery degredation that would constitute a "failed" system. I think it basically means the battery pack won't work at all. I just checked my owners manual and don't see any percentages there. Not really sure any of this applies to this thread, about hybrid use. An Energi is going to function as a hybrid for a long, long time. -
OK, I'll try and be sensitive to the forum. On the C-Max Energi, late model 2013's do not have the setting for MPGe; they deleted the capability. Can't recall the production run where it happened.

How far have you been able to stretch your battery?
stevedebi replied to jstewart0131's topic in Fuel Mileage
That is a tough route from south to north. There is a long uphill grade (Sepulveda), and a really long and steep grade up the Newhall pass. No way to charge up at work? The best solution I can think of is to use the HVB to assist on the uphill portions, especially the Newhall pass. -

stevedebi replied to jstewart0131's topic in Fuel Mileage
Is that North to South over the Sepulveda pass? That would be about right. Except for the uphill on the pass, that is all down slope. And going south is easier because it is a steep uphill followed by a longer downhill. I've found that going North is more of a problem. Up slope all the way, and not much down hill to recharge the HVB. My technique is to go to EV Auto at the base of the Sepulveda pass hill, but only if I can use both the ICE and HVB - if it goes to EV uphill (at speeds above 40) I swich back to EV Later. That seems to maximize it for me. I sometimes leave it in EV Auto until the bottom of the other side, then change to EV Later and capture the excess energy. Always switcing to EV Now off freeway. -
Driving the Energi as a hybrid
stevedebi replied to troylikesbikes's topic in Energi Driving Tips & Tricks
Ford engineered the hybrids and Energi vehicles to protect the LiIon battery. They also have no interest in having to replace them before 8 years / 100k or 10 years / 150K (CARB states). The only things I do to protect my battery: - Don't charge when it is hot; I use value charging, not to save money, but to charge after the temperature cools down. - ALWAYS run my A/C when the temperature is above 75 F or so. Ford designed the HVB without active cooling, so it only gets chilled air from the cabin.
