    Another benefit of EVs

Coronavirus has brought back some long gone things of days past, one of which is drive-in movies (in my town's case, with a jumbotron on a trailer in an unused parking lot). I realized when we got tickets that I'd better charge before I go, so I could run the defroster to keep the front windshield clear. An added benefit of EVs is not having to idle the car and breathe exhaust fumes to keep the windshield from fogging up! The other Fusion Energi right next to me and the Tesla in front were enjoying the same thing.

  2. OK the dealer got the part in last week and we got the car in for replacement. Picked it up the next day last Thursday. I charged it 11 times during the week with 6 of them being over night. Zero issues. The light ring did not stay on after charging, no flashing light ring in the morning and no check engine light. Looks like it is fixed. For those of you on warranty this is good news. For those of you that are not the part was $1,000.00 and they spent a day installing it. I hope this information helps. Matt

    FORScan tweak master list

That infernal double-honk every time I shut the door while the car is still on has driven me to reading about the little hidden settings that can be tweaked via FORScan. I found an epic master list put together by a fine gentleman, DanMc85 and I just have to share with yall here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/1yax6zfhZYj2joBczEeruqKh9X5Qhee3C0ngilqwTA7E/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true Wanna ditch the doublehonk, ditch the 30 minute idle limit, disable all automatic interior lights, he's got you covered. Enjoy! And if you want to give thanks to the guy for documenting all this: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=893VKDJR3UH5A Also, to download all your manuals https://www.fordservicecontent.com/

  4. If there was any hostility in my tone, I apologize up front. We're all on the same team. I'm certainly not saying you're wrong. What I am saying is that while you can make it last longer, I don't think the return is worth the effort. Now that's purely subjective of course. If you get satisfaction from hypermiling, analyzing battery statistics, beating the averages, and meticulous maintenance, I totally get it. These are VERY nerdy cars and I think you kind of have to be nerdy about it to full understand just why they are so good and why they have a cult following. Perhaps my point is better illustrated in this way. If you've come from a boringly reliable Prius, to then suggest someone has to pay so much attention to battery preservation before they even buy a FFE, sets a certain narrative that highlights the worst part (in my opinion) about this car... Which is the batter capacity. Nobody that has ever owned this car wishes it had a smaller battery. For someone looking at Teslas and Mitsu, and will be repulsed every time the gas engine turns on in your 50-mile commute, I just don't think it's good advice for a perspective buyer to imply that they should effectively defer battery utilization to make it last marginally longer. Lastly, I'm curious to know to just what extent you hypermile. If you're getting 28 miles from ~5.6kWh, you're doing roughly ~200wH/mi, which is more efficient than a RWD Model 3, which has an insanely efficient permanent magnet motor and a much lower drag coefficient. Very impressive. The takeaway from this is undoubtedly subjective like I said before. We're all different, and we're all looking for something different from our cars, and that's ok. For the benefit of data collection, my lifetime EV miles according to the instrument panel is 49,200 miles and FORScan says the estimated HVB capacity at full charge is 6.546kWh

  5. I'm now at 100,000 miles on my '15, so I ran the test again. Started with a full charge and the guess-o-meter saying 35 miles (no way was that accurate). 74°F day From 100% to the switch to hybrid mode: 5.1 kWh and 27.3 miles. That's .1kWh and .5 miles less than at 90k miles. So a slow degradation, but not bad. I continued on 'til the gas engine fired up and got 5.3 kwh and 32.6 miles. Again a little less than last time. So at 100k miles, my battery has lost ~7% depending on which values you use for calculation. I bought mine used at 43k miles and got 5.5kWh at the time.

    Had some fun this weekend

I took the family out for a some hiking at one of the popular State Parks in our area, so popular that they have free charging stations in the parking lot (everyone pays $10 to park, but four lucky souls get free charging). Two of the chargers are Tesla and two are J1772 (Clipper Creek units). Of course, all four were taken by Teslas... the fun of living in Silicon Valley. ? When we got back from the hike however, two of the chargers were open. Wanting to try out my new toy, I pulled into one: I recently got a TeslaTap and wanted to try it out... worked perfectly. I didn't charge much though, knowing that I was at an elevation of almost 3000', and that I was going to get a lot of regen on the way back down. I left at 20% and hit the bottom of the hill (500' elevation) 30 minutes later at 75% charge. That was a LOT of regen... much faster than L2 charging. Probably not great for the battery, but at least I didn't max it out. I burned some of it on the flats on the way home, so I got home with ~62% left.

  7. So Ford discontinued the Energi (and Fusion) after the 2020 model year. They also completely stopped posting on this forum abruptly on April 23, 2020. They had been posting regularly, sometimes even more than once a day up to that point. It's like they completely abandoned anything related to their "old" products. So much for being loyal to your customers...

  9. 3.6 is pretty low. The highway is probably not the best way to check it though, and like t93 said 50deg isn't helping you either. That said, you are probably no better than 4.0kWh, which means your 18 miles is pretty good! Don't bother with the warranty claim. It will just lead to frustration. I've only heard of one successful replacement claim, and that was years ago. Ford has a pretty (legally) tight claim as to what doesn't count, and that is pretty much anything other than complete battery failure. Many people with 3-3.5 kWh batteries were rejected for replacement. Sorry to pop that bubble, but if you search these forums you'll see the pain and trouble others have gone through for naught. Enjoy your Energi while it lasts. If you want the battery to last longest, drive EV only at city speeds and soft acceleration. Use the ICE when you need heat.

    12V battery issues

There is a procedure to re-synchronize a window. It's on the forum somewhere. My memory says it is as follows: Press the down button and hold it for 10 seconds after the window stops moving. Press the up button and again hold it for 10 seconds after the window stops moving. Test the window operation. Hopefully my memory is correct.

  11. Driving 73 mph is a real killer for EV range, driving 65 mph would have increased range by 2+ miles anyways. IMO. Paul
